Trama:
La vicenda si svolge durante l'avanzata degli Alleati verso il nord Italia, in una Roma ancora occupata dai Nazisti.
Il film segue le vicende di Giorgio e Francesco, due partigiani della resistenza, Pina, vedova e madre di un bambino, Lauretta, artista in un locale e sorella di Pina, Marina, ex-amante di Giorgio e Don Pietro, parroco del quartiere e simpatizzante dei partigiani.
Nel frattempo, gli Alleati hanno cominciato a risalire l'Italia partendo dalla Sicilia per liberarla dall'occupazione Nazista, ma non hanno ancora raggiunto Roma, che intanto è stata dichiarata "città aperta".
